Community Public Health Notice

Dear Duke School Families, Faculty and Staff,

On Friday afternoon, October 30, at 3:30 PM Duke School was informed that a part-time staff employee tested positive for COVID-19. The individual is doing well, is currently under isolation, and is following the guidance of medical professionals.

The individual reported onset of symptoms on Thursday, October 29, and was tested on the same day, October 29. The individual was last on campus on October 26, from 3 PM to 5 PM in buildings A and C. The individual was masked and wore gloves. The individual did not come into contact within six feet of any other person for greater than 15 minutes during their time on campus.

This letter is being shared to raise awareness. There is no change in status of school attendance at this time for students or faculty/staff. It is imperative that we all continue to work together to ensure our community members remain safe and healthy. Please know that Duke School will continue to monitor the situation and will provide additional information as needed.

We have notified the Durham County Public Health Department (DCPHD). DCPHD stated that, consistent with the guidance of the school's clinical advisory group, the situation does not constitute an exposure based on the information available, including the following:

  • The onset of symptoms occurred more than 48 hours following the individual’s most recent presence on campus.

  • The individual remained masked and gloved throughout campus.

  • The individual did not come into contact with any other person(s) within six feet for more than 15 minutes.

Out of an abundance of caution, our custodial team will perform on-site deep cleaning and sanitizing of buildings A and C this weekend, following the guidelines and recommendations from the NC DHHS and CDC.

In the interests of the health and safety of our community, all Duke School students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to continue to adhere to local orders, as applicable, follow CDC guidelines and recommendations, and practice social distancing. We also request that you review the Duke School Return to School Policies 2020-21 if you have questions related to our procedures during this time.

We will continue to do all we can to provide you with information as we keep paramount the health and well-being of every member of our community. Thank you for your cooperation as we work through these challenges.

Sincerely,

Lisa Nagel

Head of School
